Kristen Olthuis From Little House Creations in Chilliwack Hand Made Small Batch Local Artisan Soy Candles for Autism

Interview With Kristen Olthuis From Little House Creations in Chilliwack

In our most recent blog post article, we get to chat with Kristen Olthuis of Little House Creations in Chilliwack about her hand-made small-batch artisanal soy-based candle business, how the business got started, and what makes them different, we love learning about community members and supporting them and hope you do as well. For people with an inclination to support those who have autism, this is a good blog post to read and a business to support.

Who are you and what do you enjoy about running your candle business?

Hello, I’m Kristen, residing in Chilliwack, BC. What I find most appealing about operating my candle business is the autonomy it affords me. Being able to manage it from home and set my own hours gives me flexibility. As a mother of kids, one of whom has autism, a home-based business is a perfect fit for our family.

How did you begin making products and do you have any advice for beginners?

Candle-making has intrigued me for a considerable while, though I was uncertain about getting started. However, on my 40th birthday in November of last year, I used some of my birthday money to purchase a candle kit. Before making this investment, I extensively researched waxes, essential oils, and the general process of candle-making. The journey seemed daunting initially, but once I started experimenting with the candle kit, I quickly fell in love with the craft.

What products do you offer and where can they be purchased?

My product line consists of 100% clean-burning soy wax candles. You can purchase these from Karles Meat Market in Abbotsford, directly from me at my home, or at various markets I attend throughout the year.

What are the advantages of buying homemade, small-batch candles from you?

When you purchase a candle from me, you’re not just getting a high-quality product; you’re also supporting a small, local business and, by extension, my family. As I can’t work outside my home due to my responsibilities toward my 19-year-old autistic son, your patronage greatly aids us. My household also includes a 16-year-old daughter and a three-year-old, making life hectic but fulfilling. Choosing my candles over big-box store alternatives makes a substantial difference.

How do your products differ from others?

I offer candles in two distinct vessels: an elegant matte black vessel and a casual everyday glass vessel. These varieties cater to a broad range of aesthetic preferences. Additionally, every candle features a unique decoration on top, adding an extra ‘pop’ to the product.

What are the candles composed of?

The candles are crafted from 100% soy wax, essential oils, and fragrance blends, all of which are completely free from chemicals.

What are the perks of running a small, home-based craft business for you and your family?

One major advantage is the flexibility it provides. I can tend to my family’s needs, manage household chores, and work on my business simultaneously, all while staying at home.

Who are some crafters/small business owners who motivate you to improve and innovate?

I draw inspiration from numerous individuals I’ve met at craft markets. Being relatively new to this business, engaging with others who run their own operations is a source of motivation. My goal is to continuously improve and evolve.

What key lesson has running your own business taught you about yourself?

Running my own business has underscored the importance of maintaining a friendly demeanor at all times. I often remind myself that any person I interact with could be a potential customer.

Outside of your business, how do you spend your leisure time?

Away from my business, I’m passionate about photography and love experimenting with my camera. Traveling, singing at the top of my voice, and creating beautiful memories with my family also make up the joys of my personal time.
